The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the place where your jaw connects to your skull to allow you to open your jaw smoothly. Sometimes the temporomandibular joint is injured or damaged, leading to a debilitating condition called temporomandibular joint disorder or dysfunction (TMD). If you're having pain or hearing sounds whenever you open your jaw, schedule a consultation with our team to determine if you have TMD. At Hope Family Dentistry in Simsbury, CT, our dental team utilizes innovative equipment to diagnose and care for your TMD to alleviate painful symptoms. Your treatment will depend on the cause of your TMD and your specific condition, but a few options include oral appliances (night or mouth guards), bite alteration, and dental restorations.

TMD may be brought about by an injury to the jaw, years of grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw (bruxism), or a misaligned bite (dental malocclusion). Other conditions leading to TMD include a tumor in the temporomandibular joint or arthritis. Sometimes the reason behind TMD is uncertain, but if you're experiencing symptoms and signs, our dental team can diagnose and treat your TMJ. Some of the most common signs of TMD are tenderness or pain in the jaw joint, spasms in your facial muscles, feeling as if your jaw is stiff or stuck, and headaches that begin near your ears. Another sign is hearing cracking, popping, or clicking when you use your jaw. Contact our office to learn more about how we evaluate the jaw to determine what treatment suits you best.

To help diagnose a temporomandibular disorder, our dental team will listen carefully to understand your concerns before performing a physical exam. During the examination, we will assess how your jaw moves and start looking for indications of jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and misalignment. The team will also palpate the jawbone and lower face for any tenderness and inflammation. Our dental team might request digital x-rays of your lower head or an analysis of your bite to search for underlying factors that could determine your treatment method. Depending on the exam, we'll discuss your treatment options. They might include a dental appliance (mouth guard), teeth straightening, or dental restorations (crowns, bridges, and dentures).

Along with treatments to address the underlying cause of your TMD, our dental team may recommend different means to ease pain and other symptoms at home. This includes a soft food diet, not chewing gum or biting your nails, using heat packs on your jaw, and relaxation techniques. We can also show you exercises to strengthen your jaw or prescribe medicine to relax your jaw muscles (and to ease pain, anxiety, or even inflammation).

You should continue to go to follow-up visits so our dental team can check the progress of your TMJ treatment. If your treatment isn't working, we might look at another strategy. As soon as your TMD is treated, you should keep going to yearly dental examinations at Hope Family Dentistry to maintain your oral health.
