When one or more of your teeth are missing, it is not just a problem with appearance — missing teeth may cause other teeth to move out of position. This may lead to extra tension when biting, increased pain when you chew, or even speech impairment. A bridge restores the appearance and health of your mouth by covering spaces with a false tooth supported by either your natural teeth, dental implants, or a combination of both. At Hope Family Dentistry in Simsbury, CT, our team offers dental bridges with top-quality materials to help restore your beautiful smile. If you have one or more teeth missing from your smile, schedule a consultative appointment with our dental team to learn about your restoration options with dental bridges.

People with missing teeth don't merely have an aesthetic problem — gaps between your smile may heavily impact your oral health. Your mouth is balanced carefully, and a gap may affect its function. Over time, a missing tooth may cause other teeth to shift, creating bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite) and atrophy of the gums and jawbone. A dental bridge requires the surrounding teeth to be strong enough to support the restoration, along with a good jawbone and gum tissue density. Our dental team will examine your mouth during your exam and consultation to help you choose the best bridge type (traditional, cantilever, Maryland bonded, or resin bonded) and material (porcelain, ceramic, metal, or porcelain fused to metal).

Once your supporting teeth get filed down and prepared, our dental team will take digital x-rays and dental impressions to create your custom bridge. If needed, a temporary bridge may be used while your custom one is made. Once your dental bridge is ready, the needed areas of your mouth will get prepped with a numbing agent. Stronger sedation methods may be used if you have any dental anxieties or trouble with a gag reflex, to help keep you calm during the placement. The bridge can be cemented in its position or connected to dental implants, depending on the support you and our dental team chose during your consult. Our dental team will adjust the fit of your bridge so it is comfortable in your mouth as well as stable.

Once your bridge is in place, you should experience a noticeable improvement in the appearance and function of your teeth. You may schedule a follow-up visit at Hope Family Dentistry to adjust your bridge's fit if it feels loose after it gets placed. Our dental team, or an assistant on the team, will show you how to maintain your dental bridge, including how to clean it and any foods to avoid. It's important to keep your bridge and mouth clean since decay can develop under restoration. With proper care, your dental bridge may last for many years. You should continue to schedule appointments at Hope Family Dentistry to get an annual dental examination and cleaning twice a year. During your examination, our team can evaluate the health and fit of your custom bridge to decide if it needs to be replaced or repaired.
