Cavities, one of the most common dental problems, are created when bacteria eats away at your enamel. Previously, cavities were filled with an amalgam material, which is a mixture of metals like silver or mercury. Now we know that amalgam fillings don't bond fully with the enamel and the mercury can be hazardous to your general health. At Hope Family Dentistry in Simsbury, CT, our team offers tooth-colored fillings made from a composite resin to fill and protect cavities. Our dental team can also replace metal fillings with composite resin fillings for a safer and more attractive treatment for cavities.

Tooth-colored fillings usually fill in the decay in the tooth after it is cleaned out by our dental team. Composite resin is a versatile material that can be used to correct other issues with your teeth, such as cracks or excessive wear on the enamel by teeth grinding (bruxism). Since the material is tinted to match your teeth, fillings may be placed on the back and front teeth for a seamless appearance. If you have amalgam fillings, talk to our dental team about getting them removed and replaced with tooth-colored fillings.

Getting a filling at Hope Family Dentistry is typically a simple procedure. The area surrounding the cavity will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize your discomfort. Stronger sedation methods can be considered for any fears or anxieties to keep you relaxed during the procedure. After you are ready, the decayed enamel can be removed with a special drill that Our dental team will choose based on the location of the cavity and the amount of decay. Once the enamel is treated and the area is disinfected, it will be replaced with the composite material and set with a special light. Our dental team will polish the filling so it matches your other teeth.

You should be able to resume your normal day after your tooth-colored filling is complete, but you may have some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for 1 – 3 days. You may use over-the-counter pain medicine to treat discomfort; however, you shouldn't have any major issues. If, after a few days, the filling seems high or uneven, please get in touch with us. Your filling should be cleaned by following a regular home oral care routine with daily brushing and flossing. When you return for your annual dental exam, our dental team will check your filling and decide if it needs to be repaired or replaced.
